Designer: Giopato and Coombes

Cristiana Giopato and Christopher Coombes have been working together for about 6 years. Their collaboration develops in a continuous dialogue of aesthetic and cultural reasons, accompanied by an evolution of functional and productive methods. The objective is the creation of projects that are not reduced to compromise, but which unite these two fundamentals, rising above each single element. In 2004 they began their first research project, with the guidance and encouragement of George Sowden, for whom Christopher worked for three years. This project sees Christopher leading 30 emerging international designers in organizing the "In Dust We Trust" exhibition which leads to the formation of the Industreal company. The same year they met Vittorio Livi who commissioned them their first industrial design project. This is "Jonker", a hexagonal coffee table for Fiam Italia. Another important figure in their training path is Patricia Urquiola, at whose studio Cristiana worked for three years and who in 2006 selected them to participate in the 'Invitation Section' of the Promosedia competition, a project that gives them the opportunity to work under the guidance of Marco Romanelli, as well as a monographic exhibition at the Spazio Orlandi. In 2007 they were selected by Andrea Branzi and Silvana Annicchiarico to participate in the New Italian Design exhibition, which led to the birth of further collaborations with La Triennale Di Milano, including the 'Prime Cup'. In 2010, on the occasion of the Uncovered exhibition, they presented the "Tomahawk" lamp, subsequently produced in a limited edition in collaboration with the "Dilmos" gallery, and the "Alfred" armchair. Today Cristiana Giopato and Christopher Coombes operate in two key sectors: mass production, where industrial and market realities are always present, and the creation of new realities by examining the fundamentals of our industry and seeking new possibilities within a particular creative-productive process. They actively collaborate with Glass Idromassaggi, Fiam Italia, Livit by Fiam, Miniforms, Novamobili, Dilmos, Rossana Orlandi, La Triennale di Milano and Industreal. Their work has been published in magazines around the world, including the “New York Times” (In Dust We Trust exhibition), “Interni” Korea (monograph), “Il Sole 24 Ore” Italia (Mermaid chair), “ Interni” Italy (Uncovered exhibition), “Icon” UK (Abutilao lamp), “Glamour” Italy (Bird On A Wire lamp), “Elle Decor” Italy (Gypsy coffee table), “AD” Russia (Jonker coffee table) and in books “The International Design Yearbook 2007” (Patricia Uquiola, Jennifer Hudson), “D Come Design” (Anty Pansera, Luisa Bocchietto) and “Material Thoughts” (Bramston David).
