Design Alessandro Mendini
Architect, designer and artist, Alessandro Mendini was born in Milan in 1931. In 1959 he graduated in architecture and Studio Nizzoli Associati was his first place of work. In 1970 he abandoned architectural design to dedicate himself to journalism specializing in architecture and design. He directed the magazine Casabella from 1970 to 1976 and the following year he founded Modo which he led until 1979. That same year, Giò Ponti handed him over as director of Domus, a position he continued until 1985. 25 years later, from March 2010 he took over the direction of the magazine for a period.
In the Seventies Mendini took part in most of the radical design experiences that saw the light of day in this period. In 1973 he was among the founders of Global Tools, a group that is part of counterdesign and strongly opposes tradition. In 1979 he joined Studio Alchimia, which aims to create objects with references to popular culture and kitsch, outside of industrial production and their functionality.
In 1989 he opened the Atelier Mendini with his brother Francesco in Milan. He creates objects, furniture, environments, paintings, installations, architecture. He collaborates with international companies such as Magis, Alessi, Philips, Cartier, Bisazza, Swatch, Hermès, Venini and is a consultant for various industries, including in the Far East, for the formulation of their image and design problems.
He was a professor of design at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna and is an honorary professor at the Academic Council of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China. He has organized several exhibitions and seminars in Italy and abroad and his works can be found in various museums around the world.
With the Atelier Mendini he has operated in various countries, designing, among other things, the Alessi factories in Omegna, the new Olympic swimming pool in Trieste, a tower in Hiroshima, Japan; the Groningen Museum in Holland and other buildings in Europe and the United States. In Korea, Atelier Mendini designed the headquarters of the Milan Triennale in Incheon, and in Seoul it develops various architecture, interior and design works.
In 2014 he was awarded his third Compasso d'Oro, at the Career, the European Prize for Architecture 2014 in Chicago and the Honorary Degree from the Academy of Fine Arts of Wroclaw in Poland.
