Olefin is a synthetic material composed of 100% polypropylene, a thermoplastic polymer. The transformation from "plastic" to fibers was a partly Italian invention: in 1963 the chemists Giulio Natta and Karl Ziegler were awarded the Nobel Prize for their studies in this field.
The appearance of Olefin is very similar to that of cotton, and for this reason it is mainly used as an outdoor fabric for cushions.
Unlike the natural material, however, olefin fiber is more water resistant. It is in fact a waterproof fabric, which dries quickly and prevents the formation of mould.
